Should I try out for band captain?

I originally signed up to be woodwind captain but I ended up not getting the role. In my interview with my BD, he said that no one signed up to be band captain, they even sent out an email saying that they were looking for a band captain. The leadership lists came out today and it looks like they didn't find anyone to be band captain. Should I tell my director that since no fulfilled the role of band captain I wouldn't mind stepping up for the role?
