when should I add new sponge filter to new tank

I put together a new tank but just decided that I wanted to put the new sponge filter in my old tank so it can absorb some of the beneficial bacteria. Does any know about how long I should leave it in until I can take it out? And is there any harm in having two filters in the tank for that time period?
