Work colleague - suspicions

Anyone else think something doesn't make sense regarding her work colleague, the one who came forward a year later to tell the police about a possible mystery boyfriend she'd been seeing the night before? Why wait all that time to tell the police? And do you believe she confided in him or is it fantasy?

He's also the guy who said he planning to pick her up the morning she disappeared and then changed his mind and instead drove a different, longer route. Why?

Nothing about his statements make sense. I understand he was interviewed numerous times? Then much later decided to mention about the possible mystery boyfriend, much to the annoyance of the police who were surely wondering why he'd waited til now to mention his conversation with Claudia.
