Injustice sensitivity: how to deal with getting in trouble after standing up for yourself or others
One of the ADHD traits I struggle with the most is injustice sensitivity. Recently I joined a social club at uni and at one of our get-togethers some things were said about a person that I deemed really unfair. Due to personal reasons the person in question was unable to come to the gatherings a few times and they spoke badly about her because of it. Earlier the girl had opened up to us about her personally situation so during the outing I suggested we give her more support for the situation instead of judging her, but I was shut down by overpowering opinions. I want to clarify that this club was purely social so there wasn’t any practical aspect that we needed her for.
Anyway, over the course of the months her situation worsened and more things were said about her which eventually made her leave the group. Today I sent a message to the groupchat saying that I don’t feel comfortable about how her situation was handled and that it has made me realize that this group isn’t the right fit for me. I specifically stated multiple times that I understand that everyone has a different way of handling these things and that thats okay too, but it’s just not the right fit for me then. Despite my disclaimers it has caused a huge uproar and several people to be really mad at me.
I still stand by my point, however I also have raging anxiety beside my ADHD and that doesn’t go together well. I will never see these people again but I’m still severely stressed out and deeply regret speaking up. My hearts beating out of my chest and I can’t sleep. The girl that I stood up for told me that she was touched by my message and was really thankful, but that still doesn’t ease my anxiety.
Things like this happen often so I tried to get myself to just let go of my morals and stop doing things like this, because I can’t carry the weight, but I still can’t stop.
