Is there a market for this project? If not, just finish anyways?
I am a dev looking to finish my first game. I have made several real world projects, but want to finish and launch and actual steam game.
My game in question is a low-mid poly FPS multiplayer game in Unity. The target is to have a simple and fun gameplay loop, heavily inspired by Cod4, MW2 and Black Ops.
Just a simple gameplay loop, few game modes, limited killstreaks, customization that is simple and not overwhelming, and maybe the charm of unbalanced gameplay, killstreaks or weapons.
It is more of a COD style game than a Battlefield.
I am choosing Poly because performance is better, assets are cheaper, and mobile can now be an options.
After developing for some time, I got the gut punch of discovering “Polygon”, a game that seems very similar to what I’m trying to make. In fact, it looks like he may have reskinned the very assets I plan to use in my game. He may even be using the same FPS package in Unity that I am using.
It was a real gut punch, and makes me somewhat apprehensive to finish. But after some thinking, I guess I’ll try out the game “it’s freemium” and try to see how I can make mine different. My only fear now is scope creep, I still want to keep it simple.
Does anyone have any advice? Just finish as is irregardless of this other one? Try to find a new art style? Learn this other game and make mine different in a key way?
