Considering mx or dmx? Learn about resensation and nerve sparing mastectomy

Young Cancer Patients

I want to scream this from the mountaintops because not enough people know about this- you do not need to lose feeling in your breast after a mastectomy.

Ask your surgeon about resensation, also known as innervation, where cadaver nerves are grafted on and replace those they remove. Most patients keep at least safety level sensation so you’ll know if you’re burned or something. For some, much more sensation than that or full sensation. It also helps reduce nerve pain after mastectomy because it gives nerve impulses somewhere to “go”.

There’s also nerve sparing mastectomy, which fewer surgeons do, where they try to keep your nerves while removing the breast tissue.

You can learn more and look up surgeons here: https://www.resensation.com/breast-reconstruction-surgeon-locator/

Nerve grafting is not new, but is still new in breast reconstruction. Nerve sparing is still experimental. As a result insurance coverage is hit and miss for both, however we don’t get more options without patient demand! Not too long ago reconstruction wasn’t covered by insurance either.

Resensation and nerve sparing also work with diep. Also if you didn’t have this done when you got implants, you can do it when you switch to diep from implants.

I learned about this late in the game so trying to share the knowledge.
