Do you think we downplay the issue behind Trump’s economic disaster by reducing it to “rich get richer”?
I keep seeing everyone reducing their analysis of Trump’s tariffs as “the rich are getting richer.” While I do believe that’s an issue and I do believe it’s 100% intentional, I also think that at least for Trump it’s still a matter of ideology. As in, if you took away the rich getting richer, I absolutely believe he’s fully deluded and bought in enough to autarky that he’d still pursue it.
Do you think it’s more effective to reduce this business down to “his rich buddies get richer,” or do you think something is lost here if we don’t confront the actual ideology behind this and how entrenched it’s becoming in America (economic nationalism, economic grievance against anything that doesn’t say “made in America, etc)?
Hopefully my point came across and you guys don’t think I’m downplaying the corruption here. IMO even if you remove the corruption there’s still a massive chunk of Americans (including some on the left, albeit not as many as MAGA) who just harbor a deep resentment against any company making anything overseas or importing materials.
Once in a blue moon I see the Milton Friedman pencil video and it just reminds me of how ass backwards so many people’s perception of trade and economics is.
