Viscous coupler failed twice on previous manual Forester, drove used 2016 Crosstrek off lot & same issue… am I cursed?
Have done a bit of research and seems like it’s not an uncommon issue for the 5MTs, but I am feeling pretty devastated. I even brought up my concern about this issue several times at the dealer given my history with it and even test drove the car for 30+ minutes with the intention to try to warm it up long enough to get the binding on tight turns to happen before purchasing but alas, only started after I drove it away on the highway for an hour and pulled into a parking lot.
I suspected the Forester may have been related to the aftermarket lift I bought it with (and second donor transmission was already rebuilt unbeknownst to me and got put back in with the driveshaft upside down… 🤷🏼♀️ 🤦🏼♀️) but now I am worried about what could have caused it on the new (to me) Crosstrek, 93,000 kms, that seems to be in really good shape otherwise and was supposedly treated well by one owner. However, serves me right potentially because it has 5 minor accidents on its record (all left front or rear corners $1-2k Canadian fixes). Could some accident-related issues lead to centre diff failure that will give me grief down the road? Anything specific I should ask my Subaru mechanic (not dealer but specialist) to check out during a post-purchase inspection alongside the transmission repair? Am I being punished by the car gods for refusing to give up my manual AWD transmission? Sigh please talk me off the ledge… or encourage me to jump I guess lol
