2 Months In As A Clinical Research Assistant, Out Of My Depth?
Hi everyone. I recognize I may be asking for advice on something that may have already been covered but I really need some input.
I recently landed a position as a Clinical Research Assistant at a Hospital. I was completely unfamiliar with the field prior. I earned a BS and worked in clinical laboratories for roughly 10 years before entering the field of research. I wanted to explore other areas that would allow me to grow over time, however I am feeling completely out of my depth. Laboratories often become very mechanical, although I was presented with many challenges, I always handled them with ease. They didn’t require much other than quick thinking, organizing and functioning within operating procedures.
With research, I feel as though my training has consisted of “read these protocols, do your GCP training” and not much else. While management is kind and offer support when I have questions, they do not go out of their way to provide exposure to new concepts or issues I may encounter along the way. I was hired as a backup coordinator for another coordinator who I was told would also be responsible for my training, however this person is extremely unfriendly and quite competitive. I have no desire to surpass anyone. I truly just want to learn but this person often states that they had no one to guide them, so it is unfair for them to be asked to guide me.
During my training, I explicitly stated I had absolutely no exposure to this field, and inquired heavily about training. I was told it would be a supportive atmosphere where I would be shown everything before having to do things on my own. I am afraid that may not end up being the case, and I don’t know how to ask for help or hands on training. It seems like I’m expected to stare at a computer screen and eventually just know what to do and when to do it. I don’t want to quit before I give myself a chance to excel, but I don’t know how I can if the atmosphere isn’t more supportive and structured. Any advice is appreciated.
