My Faith Feels Like It's Crumbling - Can Anyone Help Me Understand?
Hey everyone, I'm a lifelong Christian, and lately, I've been wrestling with some really troubling questions. Things I've never really looked at too closely, and now they're kind of shaking everything I thought I knew. I'm hoping someone here can offer some clarity, because right now, I feel lost and scared about my faith.
- The Trinity: We say we believe in one God, right? But then it's also Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – all at the same time? It just doesn't make sense in my head. One is three? Three is one? Even smart people have been trying to explain this for centuries, and it still feels like a contradiction. Am I missing something fundamental here?
- The Incarnation: This one really gets me. God is supposed to be all-powerful and eternal, beyond everything. How could He become fully human as Jesus? Someone who got tired, hungry, even died? How can the infinite become limited? It feels like it cheapens God somehow, or just breaks all logic.
- Original Sin: This feels so unfair. I'm supposed to be born guilty because of something Adam and Eve did way back when? I didn't do anything wrong, but I'm already condemned? That doesn't sound like a just God at all. It feels like collective punishment, and that's not right.
- The Atonement: Jesus had to die on the cross to pay for our sins because God demanded it? Why would a God who is supposed to be all-forgiving need such a violent and, honestly, kind of bizarre act to forgive us? It feels like there has to be another way, a more logical reason.
- Treatment of Women: This is where I really start to feel sick.
- Wives have to submit to their husbands in everything? Women can't teach or have authority over men? Where's the equality I thought Christianity preached?
- Then I read about Deuteronomy 22 and a man who rapes a girl just having to marry her and pay her dad? The girl's feelings don't even matter? That's horrifying.
- And Numbers 31, where women are just kept as war prizes? How can this be in the same book we call holy?
- And the purity laws in Leviticus about periods and childbirth making women "unclean"? That's just basic biology! It feels degrading.
- Inheritance mostly going to men in the Old Testament? Where's the fairness in that?
- Women being told to be silent in church in Corinthians? Doesn't what we have to say matter?
- The "Sinless" Savior:
- Jesus cursing a fig tree for not having fruit out of season? That sounds petty and mean, not like the loving person I'm told he was.
- Calling a desperate mother a dog? That's just... cruel. How can someone who's supposed to be the embodiment of love say something like that?
- "Divine" Commandments:
- Stoning people to death for worshipping other gods, even family? That sounds like the opposite of tolerance and love.
- God ordering genocide in the Old Testament? How can a loving God command the wiping out of entire groups of people?
- And Psalm 137 talking about smashing babies' heads? That's pure evil. How can that be in the Bible?
- Stoning children for being disobedient in Deuteronomy? That's barbaric!
I'm so confused and honestly, really disturbed by some of these things. It's making me question everything I've ever believed. Has anyone else struggled with these things? Can someone help me understand how to reconcile these with the loving and logical God I thought I knew? Any insights would be greatly appreciated, because right now, my faith feels like it's on shaky ground.
