When the heart won’t let go
I recently met an incredible woman while on vacation. Someone whose presence lingers in my thoughts long after our time together. Despite the distance between us — over 2,000 miles — I felt an undeniable connection. We seemed to truly click. Yet, as with many beautiful things in life, some parts just don’t align.
She’s deeply focused on building her career, and I genuinely admire that about her. Her ambition and drive only add to the many reasons I hold her in such high regard. Still, our communication has felt slightly off at times, and she’s been clear: a long-distance relationship isn’t something she sees working. I told her I understood, and I meant it — I truly value our friendship and want to keep it alive. But it’s difficult not to see her through a different lens.
There’s something about the way she speaks, the way she moves through life — it captivates me. I made promises, heartfelt ones, about how often I’d travel to see her, how present I would be even from afar. But for her, physical closeness is essential, and without it, everything else fades into the background.
She also shared that choosing a partner is not something she takes lightly; she’s thinking long-term — something I admire deeply, though it hurts. Because I, too, am searching for something lasting, and I would move heaven and earth to bring her joy, to protect and cherish her.
Despite it all, I find myself trying to take a step back, to temper my feelings. But every time we exchange a message, I find myself drawn to her all over again. It’s as if a part of me refuses to let go, no matter how much reason tells me to.
How do I respectfully hold space for the deep feelings I have for someone who doesn’t see a future with me, without losing myself in the hope of something that may never be? 🥲
