AITA for asking my parents about their financial situation?
So a week previous to the situation, I(20f) was frustrated with my dad(63m) because he didn’t tell me he didn’t file his taxes which I needed for my FAFSA after I had already submitted it and he said he had filed it on there. I had to fill out a bunch of forms and might lose my campus job if I don’t get the funding I need.
This week on the weekly call, I had brought it up saying how it’s nice to know things ahead of time, so I can plan ahead. He got stuffy saying
“You don’t need to know every issue we have, worrying isn’t good for you”
and I said “It’s not worrying, it’s planning ahead. I kind of need to know especially if it affects me.”
He started getting upset with me, lecturing me saying “I didn’t pay the taxes because I can’t afford it and I’m running around trying to pay your tuition. Does it make you feel better knowing we’re struggling? We encouraged you to go to any school you wanted and we’re putting your education first.”
I said “Yes it does make me feel better. There are ways I can help elevate the stress” He just blew me off and said goodnight.
I want to say I have always shown gratitude and thanks for them paying for my education. I take school very seriously and am making the most of it. I don’t however like the idea that I can’t know about things that affect me. I could’ve avoided the whole thing if I knew and helped find a solution.
My mom is calling me telling me I should apologize but I really don’t feel like I should. I guess I could be considered the asshole because I already know he’s kind of prideful and may be embarrassed about not having as much money. I probably could’ve avoided hurting his feelings.
