help! gifting edible/food items to villagers

i’ve been having a lot of fun with the farming/crops/cooking on acnh recently and i wanted to ask if gifting villagers food items like ones i craft helps with friendship? and if it does, is it good or bad? does it have to be specific food items? i’m probably thinking way too deep into this but i’m just curious !
