Best flatbed scanner & software for thousands of 35mm negatives, slides, and prints

I am digitizing a large collection of family photos, primarily 35mm color negatives but also 35mm slides as well as some standard 4x6 and 3x5 prints. I am currently using the Canon CanoScan 8800F (simply because I purchased the scanner years ago and never upgraded) with VueScan.

Are there setups that are *much* better than this, and that are worth the investment? I decided not to outsource this to a professional lab because the cost would be prohibitive given the size of the job. Thank you for any advice!
