Looking to date again, and was wondering if there's anything I should look out for.

I'm moving to a new university outside my hometown, and I think I'm ready to get into a relationship. My last relationship ended in part because I wanted a more dominant partner, and I was wondering if there were like ways to to tell if someone is interested in that sorta thing before actually asking her out. Is there a way of asking someone that shows what I like or sticks out? I'm probably not phrasing this very well, for which I apologize. If any clarification is needed, please let me know.
