Question about the burning IVF clinic hypothetical (read carefully before commenting)
We all know the burning IVF clinic hypothetical. Would we save the 1 5 year old or the 1,000 embryos. know it’s an annoying hypothetical pro choicers ask. Most pro lifers say they’d save the 5 year old, but that’s a decision based on moral intuition and not on the actual moral value of the embryos verses the 5 year old child. But from a completely honest and consistent standpoint, wouldn’t the right thing to do be to save the many embryos over the 1 screaming 5 year old? I know most people’s instinct would be to save the 5 year old, but emotions aside, wouldn’t the BEST thing to do be to save the many 1,000 viable embryos, from an objective standpoint? If we really do view the embryos as exactly the same as born children, then maybe we should answer the hypothetical differently than we usually do.
