Dealing with new neighbors leaving cigarette butts outside my front door.
I bought my upstairs condo a year ago. The family who lived across from me moved out a few months ago. I was on good terms with them, but don’t know the owner at all. It’s seemingly taken a while for the owner to find a new tenant, but a new family just moved in this week.
From what I can tell there’s roughly four adults and two children living in the unit and I noticed pretty immediately that there’s a smoker in the house as the inside of the house and the shared landing now reeks of smoke.
I was willing to make peace with the smell sometimes filtering out, but today I walked out and counted four cigarette butts in front of my door, on the stairs and at the bottom of the stairs. They appeared overnight and have been there all day, with no sign that they have any plans to pick them up. My dog also went to sniff/eat one which obviously immediately irked me.
I find this frankly rude and disgusting for a new tenant to do, and don’t want the behavior to continue, but they literally just moved in so I don’t have any kind of rapport with them. I’m a woman who lives alone except for when my boyfriend is occasionally over so I don’t necessarily feel comfortable saying anything in case it starts our relationship off on a bad foot.
I would contact my HOA or the owner but I’m not sure if I could stay anonymous. I do know the HOA walks around the property occasionally and take photos of things/send notices to people about it, but I’m not sure if this constitutes something they would come up and inspect.
I could also get over my fear of things being awkward and try to bring it up with them when I introduce myself, but wanted to see if anyone else had experience with this before I do.
Thank you!
