Expired PGWP, Need Opinions?

Hi everyone, I could really use some advice. My work permit expired in December 2024. In November 2024, I applied for a study permit—to genuinely continue studying, and boost my immigration points. Unfortunately, I still haven’t received a decision.

In the meantime, my employer won’t allow me to work at all—not even part-time—on implied status while waiting for the study permit decision. My lawyer has submitted both an ATIP request and a webform inquiry to IRCC, but there’s been no response.

This situation has been incredibly hard financially and emotionally. I finally got so tired and anxious that I booked a flight home (scheduled for next week), thinking that might be best. But now my lawyer is warning me that if I leave, it might be very difficult to return to Canada and that I could be considered out of status.

I’m feeling stuck, confused, and unsure what the best move is at this point. Has anyone been through something similar or have any guidance? Any help or insight would be so appreciated.
