The Fall of The Walking Dead:
- The Firing of Frank Darabont
- Frank Darabont understood the source material. He made these characters real. A lot of people didn’t care for the character Lori, but I love Sarah Wayne Callie’s’ performance as her. Darabont’s direction was strong. His firing was the start of the fall.
- The Writing of Andrea
- Andrea is a beloved character in the comics. The way she was written in Season 3 caused a lot of controversy. Her story with the Governor was frustrating. I do love the redemption she got in the end, but she deserved better. The decision to kill her off last minute for shock value was bad. Glen Mazzara got fired because of it. Laurie Holden did the best she could with what she gotten.
- Beth’s Death
- I love Beth’s arc in Seasons 4 and 5. She really became her own character. The death of Beth was the first death that caused major backlash. I say that it was the first time a character got a real focus and it ended in their death. It was the start of a trend for the future characters who were going to die in the show. I love Beth’s death and the impact it brings. The show didn’t however honor her character with Daryl like they should have. After Beth, they didn’t really know what to do with Daryl. He just gruffed, did cool action sequences, and sold merchandise. He was really a character, just a product after Beth. It’s like his character died with her. If she was honored more with his character, then it would have been a better legacy.
- The Treatment of Glenn
- Season 6 did Glenn dirty. The writers dangled Glenn on the end of a string. Faked his death with the dumpster, removed him from the opening credits, and played with audiences. The infamous cliffhanger of that season was pathetic. It ruined the scene. In the comic it was to the point. The show, did it to boost ratings. They claimed they didn’t know who it was going to be picked, but that was a lie. The ratings did go up, but after the first episode, it plummeted. The harsh way they did Glenn. Milking it. Having Abraham die first. Then surprisingly kill Glenn too. It just was brutal. Too brutal. Truly the episode that killed the series because it betrayed the trust with audiences.
- Carl’s Death
- this was the death that really sealed the deal. Whatever the reason was pathetic. Scott Gimple killed Carl. Chandler Riggs was down to play Carl to the end. He wasn’t going to college. He was dedicated to the show. His father was disappointed with Gimple. Gimple told Riggs that he was safe. But last minute decided to kill him. I find it funny that Mazzara was fired killing Andrea, but Gimple was basically promoted to Chief Content Creator of TWD Universe. Carl was never supposed to die. He was the character that lived on and was the eventual focus at the end of the comics. Carl’s death put the nail in the coffin. Season 8 was one of the worst seasons on the show because of this. I would say the last season was the worst because it was extended, and focused on pointless storylines. Season 9 was a great redemption season but the damage was already done.
