Notice: Removal of "Witch Hunting" Posts - Please Read!
Good evening, everyone!
I am unsure about Reddit's mechanics for how reports work (as in, I am unsure if the system flags it down or someone is actively reporting the posts so I see mail about this), but within maybe the past several hours, I have received messages in my Mod Queue/Mail about needing to remove posts due to those reasons. Unfortunately, though, for whatever reason, I could not flag it down as the "Rule #5", both here on my desktop and on the phone, but I did want to say that we do have a rule on here pertaining to witch hunting of players; even with the players being obviously malicious and or scammers.
Please allow me the ability to explain.
When I accepted a position here for being a moderator (along with two other mods here), one of the issues discussed was the problem with allowing players to take these screenshots/comments and posting them on here, because it would actually cause some of the people on this Subreddit to not necessarily block those unfair players, but to seek them out and start harassing them. I recall reading a post on here several months back where this exact situation did happen, and the mods did feel that the ability to "callout" folks was becoming a bit abusive.
Please understand that I am in NO WAY saying that what those scammers did were not wrong, but allowing the space here to publicly oust these folks freely breeds a different kind of hate that we as a community believe does not reflect our values.
Rest assured, I will make sure to reach out to the two other mods. I am likely the most active one, and am usually the ones to catch certain posts, such as these. The last time we got together and talked, we talked about potentially having people from this subreddit "report" these names/IDs to the mod team personally, so we can make a thread full of all of these unfair players, but admittedly, this was maybe a month or so ago. We felt that privately reporting to the mod team would be a little better, as far as making sure that the callouts do not get out of hand.
I understand if this was not the message anyone was hoping to read; I am fully prepared to receive a massive amount of downvotes, but to also hear ideas from all of you, so that I can refer to them when talking to the other two mods.
Thank you for reading.
