Mattel Winds Down Hot Wheels Virtual Garage NFTs Amid Market Shift

Toy giant Mattel has announced it will halt all future releases of its Hot Wheels Virtual Garage NFTs, signaling a pause as the company reevaluates its digital collectibles strategy.

In a statement posted to its website, Mattel confirmed there will be no new NFT series or feature drops “for the foreseeable future,” though existing collections and the Mattel Digital Collectibles Marketplace will remain active through 2025. Redemptions will still be honored, and users can continue buying, selling, and trading NFTs within Mattel's ecosystem.

However, NFTs currently cannot be transferred to external wallets or marketplaces, a limitation Mattel says it is reviewing.

The Hot Wheels NFT Garage launched in 2021, with its 10th and most recent series released in December 2023. Despite growing initial interest, Mattel’s decision comes amid a broader NFT market cooldown, which saw global NFT sales plunge 63% year-over-year in Q1 2025.

While Nike also sunset its RTFKT platform earlier this year, others like FIFA are doubling down, planning new blockchain initiatives.

Mattel says it’s working on a “long-term plan” for its virtual collectibles and will share updates with the community in the future.
