Maldives Signs $9B Deal to Build Crypto Hub in Bold Bid to Attract Investment

The Maldives government has signed a $9 billion agreement with Dubai-based MBS Global Investments to construct a massive crypto and blockchain hub in its capital, Malé, aiming to diversify the nation’s economy and draw in foreign investment.

According to the Financial Times, the proposed Maldives International Financial Centre will span 830,000 square meters, employ up to 16,000 people, and take approximately five years to complete — a bold move considering the project exceeds the nation’s annual GDP of $7 billion.

The initiative reflects the Maldives' strategy to reduce dependency on tourism and fisheries by tapping into the rapidly expanding Web3 and fintech sectors. However, the archipelago will face stiff competition from established crypto hubs like Dubai, Singapore, and Hong Kong, all of which already boast regulatory clarity and deep capital pools.

As the global crypto landscape matures, the Maldives is betting big that its island paradise can become a serious player in blockchain innovation and digital finance.
