Daily Gorillaz Track Review 5: Clint Eastwood

Discussion

If I'm being honest, I don't even really know where to start with this one. I mean...it's Clint Eastwood, what else is there to say?. This was the breakout hit for this band and to this day it's one of the songs they're most well known for. Some might call it overplayed due to how immensely popular it is, but I think it's iconic for a reason and I believe it's popularity is very well warranted. Everything from the hook, to the beat, the melodica part, DELS VERSES, and the music video is absolutely classic at this point and it's a real relic of the era while still aging surprisingly well. The hook is nonsensical but extremely catchy, which is basically the standard for this album. We get more melodica playing, and the main riff has become such a staple of the group that Damon always starts the song by playing it by itself. Dels verses are EMACULATE to this very day and he still stands as one of the best Gorillaz collaboraters despite being the first. Both of his verses are just so fun to sing along to. And that two minute long melodica solo is just so out of left field and strange, but so is everything else about this song. This isn't like an absolute top tier Gorillaz song in my opinion, but it's still a great tune, and I'm glad it's stood the test of time and is still remembered fondly. This was what put Gorillaz on the map, and it's not hard to see why.

Best Elements: Del, Melodica

Overall: 9/10
