Saying goodbye

This is going to be long and probably a little confusing but here it is. I have a 9/10 year old rescue that has been with us for about 8 years. He's been a good boy but has had his moments. When we first got him he resource guarded his food really bad. He actually bit two different dogs on different occasions for getting in his bowl. Both of which their owners knew how he was and chose to disregard it. Fast forward a few years and my husband was joking around with me and he but his arm. Recently(like last 3 months) he's gotten more skiddish even around us (me, husband and 2 kids). He recently but my nephew and my daughter. Not nipped but actually bit. They are doing okay and healing but it is time to make a decision That being said my husband said to re home but no one wants a dog that has bitten. He said he will take him to the shelter but I don't want that to happen. He is a good boy, just made some mistakes. My daughter's bite was reactionary to her tripping over him. I feel as though euthanasia is the best option for him as I don't feel he will treated right at a shelter and honestly thinks they would eventually put him down anyway. I would rather be there with him in his last moments. Please be kind with me. He is my first baby. I love him and this is hard but he can't be around kiddos anymore but I don't want him to be abused.
