Rookie question

I just tried to get my trusty old Logitech mouse to work with a MacAir I got a couple of weeks ago, and it doesn't. (Works great with my Surface.) Does Apple require an Apple mouse, or might this be some kind of anomaly? I suspect the former, but I would love to be proven wrong. Thanks.
