Supporting wildlife while surrounded by crop fields?
We're about to buy >10 acres in the US midwest that is almost all pasture & lawn, but clearly used to be forested. There's maybe 15 acres of that forest remaining to the south, but outside of that, it's nearly endless corn fields in all directions. I'm planning to put in a pond, plant lots of sapling trees and have sourced a company for native grasses & wildflowers to replace much of the "lawn" portion of the property. My concern is that the surrounding crop fields (and presumable pesticide use) will heavily limit our impact.
Does anyone live somewhere similar and have you had any noticeable success with supporting insects/birds/etc.? Are the pesticides likely to affect our property (which is 100-200 feet higher than the surrounding fields)? I want to do this either way, but I have to admit I'll be pretty bummed if all I manage to create is a paradise for Japanese beetles and stink bugs.
TIA!
