Question: Why are many things locked behind c.ai+?

I know that many Character.AI users are excited when they see a new feature, only for it to be locked behind Character.AI Plus. For example, better memory, the Nyan chat style, customizable chat backgrounds, etc. But I have a question: Why are they locked behind Character.AI Plus? I'm just curious, I'm not complaining or whatever.
