AITA for being upset at someone copying my tattoo?
I have this chilli tattooed on the side of my wrist and it’s been there as a relationship tattoo with my ex since I was 16 and it symbolizes the things we both went through for 6 years. And recently my stepdad got the exact same tattoo without my knowledge or consent thinking I might like it saying it’s his present to me? I just find it a little weird. My step dad told my mom not to tell me he has the tattoo but mum told me anyway so that goes to show he probably knows I won’t like it or wants it as a surprise?. It would be one thing if it was a coincidence to get the same tattoo but it seemed deliberate, it didn’t feel right to me so I formed a message I sent this->
“ I know you probably meant it in a supportive or light-hearted way, and I really do appreciate how much you’ve been there for me and Mum. But I need to say that seeing you get the exact same chili tattoo—especially in the same place as mine—made me feel really uncomfortable.
That tattoo isn’t just a fun symbol of how much I love spicy things. It’s deeply personal and tied to a relationship I had when I was 16, as well as a few experiences that really marked my life. It’s something I’ve carried privately for a long time, and it holds meaning that isn’t visible on the surface. So when someone close to me gets the same design, in the same spot, without talking to me first, it feels like a strange kind of intrusion into something that’s very personal.
This isn’t about being territorial or gatekeeping a design—if it were just about chilies or wrist tattoos, I honestly wouldn’t have thought twice. It’s the fact that it was copied so closely and intentionally that feels different. Imagine if someone took something very specific and meaningful from your past—something emotionally significant—and used it, thinking you’d find it flattering.
Also, if I hadn’t seen it you both not telling me gives me the impression that you told Mum not to mention it to me made me feel like maybe you sensed it might upset me, which added to the discomfort.
I’m genuinely curious what made you want to get the same tattoo in the same place, and why you didn’t talk to me about it first. I know you didn’t mean to hurt me, and I really believe that—but I hope you can understand why it’s been weighing on me. I just needed to be honest about how it felt.”
