Do you sign any agreement while subletting?

Hi all! First time subletter here. I'm trying to find a sublet for six months and was wondering what the typical process looks like. Do you sign any agreement with the current tenant? or do you simply move in and start sending your rent? Since this is subletting, I'm guessing I won't be able to add my name on the original lease, right?
