Cross language keyword matching?

Hello PPC,

So I read in multiple places that Google ads do not automatically translate your keywords and serve them in another language. However, there's an account I'm working on, and I see on some smart campaigns have keyword themes in English, but then the search terms that are matched are in French. So how is this working? Not necessarily a bad thing, I just want to know more specifically when it works and when it doesn't... Pls no ChatGPT answers, i do have an account there also.
