/r/comicbooks is going to Sticky a "Suggested Reading" post for new comic readers, and we need your help!
As I'm sure you're all aware, we get A LOT of new readers asking for suggestions on what comics to read on a daily basis. While it doesn't bug me or the other mods, I know it irks plenty of people as we have a rarely visited FAQ section with reading lists for various superheroes.
We frequently get requests to "do something" about these posts. I'm not a fan of trying to inhibit new readers from getting into the hobby or trying to make this subreddit unwelcoming to new readers, but I'm always looking for new ways to make everyone happy.
Luckily, the Reddit admins introduced a function to sticky self posts at the top of the subreddit. It's a lot more noticeable than the sidebar or even the top bars, so I thought "Why not have a Suggested Reading list as a default sticky?" We can always take the list down when we're running AMAs or contests and whatnot AND people can hide it if they get sick of seeing it at the top of the page every morning. Plus, it should at least give new readers a few default titles that always get mentioned in these sort of threads anyways (like Saga or Hawkeye).
So this is what we're going to do: we're going to a handy "New Readers Guide" that will direct people towards current comics and classics to help fill their history. The list will be updated periodically with community input and it'll provide some good discussion fodder as we make the lists.
I'm thinking we'll have three sections:
-
Lists covering the Top 5 (or so) Marvel, DC and Indie books comics being published currently.
-
An abridged "Starting Point" list for franchises that are about to be featured in movies, television shows, or major comic events (a la 'I want to get into Guardians of the Galaxy, where do I start?' threads).
-
A "Beginning Guide to Comics" list covering a few comics that every person should read.
-
A "/r/comicbooks Recommends" list which covers the top current books not mentioned in other threads that acts as a random catch-all list so we're not missing.
Obviously, I'm up for suggestions on how to make this idea better. If everyone's cool with this, I'd like to get started with the project tomorrow so we can have a list ready to go next week.
