Has a “blockbuster trade” ever actually got a team a ring?
Let’s ignore Free Agency Sign & Trades for this discussion as those more closely resemble a free agency signing than a true blockbuster trade.
Obviously the Pistons are in an interesting position. Making it to the playoffs with a fairly young team means these young players now have a ton of value in the eyes of other teams and have shown they can be valuable pieces. Meaning we now get stories and hypotheticals where we can gut our entire team to pick up a Giannis or Devin Booker.
My question is, has this ever worked? From Durant landing in Phoenix, to James Harden and Westbrook constantly changing hands…none of these players have a ring. More often the not; it seems the team performs worst than when the superstar got there because of a lack of depth now. The team doesn’t become 2024 overachieving Team now with superstar but instead becomes *the traded superstar and maybe 1 or 2 good players and a bunch of nobodies. (hopefully this makes sense)
Next question is; with this in mind, do you think the front office should still seek out a superstar to bring to the team? Are the failed teams mentioned before more so a product of coaching? Let’s discuss.
