I (28f) am the only white girl my bf (35m, also white) has ever dated
TD;LR I struggle with insecurity because my boyfriend has exclusively had Asian gfs before me.
I'm just posting out of curiosity (and because I'm frankly ashamed of how insecure I am... anonymity makes it easier to articulate things). My boyfriend has always preferred Asian women all throughout his twenties and thirties-- all of his serious ex partners have been East Asian. He has been open about this fact, and prior to me, he really wouldn't even bother including white women in his Hinge searches/ever swiping on them. He feels more attraction to women of color in general (literally can't blame him, I agree) so it's not like exclusively an Asian fetish. But there is obviously a strong preference there. (Also, putting an asterisk here that I want to call out the fact that white female features have been historically coveted and set as the standard of beauty in our world bc of colonialism, etc.) (Also also, I also don't get the impression it was/is a fetish, it's more of a preference)
I slowly learned this when we first started dating... his friends would make jokes about it ("you're dating a white girl??? I'll believe it when I see it"), and literally every photo of an ex or a fling is an Asian girl. Obviously there's nothing wrong with this and we have a fantastic relationship. He is extremely affectionate, he compliments me, and we have great and very frequent sex. We've been together a year and a half, we live together, and we're likely getting engaged soon. But I admit that I struggle with insecurity about this. I love him and we have a solid relationship, but I just don't really understand why he chose to date me if he's never been attracted to white girls before. It's a little irrational, but worry that he'll be unsatisfied with me and develop feelings for an Asian girl later on. I have spoken about my insecurity, and he's pretty open with me-- he doesn't deny that it was his preference and that it was surprising to his friends and family when we started dating, but he also reassures me that he's very attracted to me. He just happened to only date Asian girls before this, but-- in his words-- he loves me and his attracted to me.
Has anyone experienced this? I know it's kind of uncommon...there's a shit ton of posts from POC about their experiences being "the first POC my partner has dated" or vice versa in an interracial couple, but we aren't an interracial couple-- we're two white ppl and the bf has a strong preference for girls who look nothing like me. If I'm really gonna get outlandishly insecure....I'll admit I'm freaked out because I just can't compete with that. (Without sounding fetishy and gross) Asian women have stunning features and I get it-- why wouldn't a man prefer that. I really try to never bring this insecurity up, but it seeps into our dynamic. I feel like I'm never going to be enough for him and it's hard for me to believe that I'm the right person for him. I worry he'll look at me 10 years later and feel like he made a mistake. And I worry his friends and family will also feel that way.
Welp! There's my irrational fear white woman playbook. The best option is to communicate my feelings, develop more self confidence, resist seeking approval and validation, yada yada. You're all right I know. I have a wonderful boyfriend who loves me and I need to nurture that and not feed this insecurity monster. Just wanted to voice this in case anyone else has experienced this!
