Can I ask for treble damages in small claims? - Wisconsin
Location: Wisconsin
My landlord verbally told me that he’s breaking the least 3 months early because he sold the place I am living in. However, he did not send anything in writing about the lease break. I think he neglected to do so because I’d have 60 days to move per the laws in Wisconsin.
I would have stayed longer before I found a new place, but a very close friend passed away and her memorial is in the middle of June and I need to be in her hometown with my family members for a few weeks.
I sent him a demand letter as to my terms of moving out sooner; however, it has been ignored by him. He has called once a week asking me when I’m moving. Can I get treble damages if I take him to court? The neighbors have told me that in the past he has done things that are illegal to other tenants that have lived here. My rent is $1300/month. If I can ask for treble damages, how much should I ask for (ball park figure)? Thanks
