Whats going on with matchmaking?

I've recently started playing again after taking a long break since the game first came out. I noticed that cross-play is back on, and on Steam, there are usually over 500 players online. I'm estimating there are at least a few thousand—if not at least a thousand—players across all platforms. So why does it take so long to get into a match? It doesn't matter whether I play as a killer or a victim, it sucks when the process of getting into a game takes longer than the actual match itself... And dont get me started on the cosmetics and paywall behind characters..
