Do Russians Always Follow the Motion Verb Rules in Casual Speech?

I've noticed that in Russian, verbs of motion like 'идти' and 'ехать' have both unidirectional and multidirectional forms. In what situations do native speakers prefer one over the other in casual speech, especially when context seems to allow both?
