Male dog to breed (one time for now)

I am trying to understand the process. We have a 4 1/2 year male old golden retriever AKC certified. We would like him to breed once at this time. I’d like to know how it works. Do I have to sign up anywhere and what are the prep work we have to do. Any advice is welcome.
