did Mary REALLY not know why she had a terrible time on the stool or was she joking?

In "a lot to take in" Mary says she ate noth but fennel for weeks sparing the onions but all the while she did have a terrible time on the stool but did not know why twas the fennel of course... but what I want to know is did she actually not know why at the time? Or was she just joking
