AITA for still saying “I love you” to my son’s dad, even though he just got a girlfriend?

My son’s dad (let’s call him Scott) and I have been broken up for years, but we’ve always had a respectful co-parenting relationship. We say “I love you” when we hang up the phone or part ways, not because we’re in love, but because we care about each other and want our son to grow up seeing that respect between his parents. It’s been our normal for a long time.

He recently started dating a new girl, literally two days ago. I was on the phone with him (with our son in the room), and at the end of the call, I said, “Love you, bye” like I always do. He suddenly said, “Can we not say that anymore?” I asked why? and he turned the camera to his new girlfriend, who said it made her uncomfortable.

I was stunned. I didn’t understand why someone who just entered the picture felt like she could dictate how I talk to my child’s father. He then said he couldn’t hug me goodbye anymore either. I asked Scott if it made him uncomfortable and he stated that it did because it made her feel that way. I then said “alright i still don’t understand and know this is new for all of us. i will think about it”.

For context, I do love Scott, but not romantically. He’s my family. We’ve been through a lot. Our son is autistic and in therapy here, and we’ve built something that works well for him. I’m not interested in stepping on his relationship, but I don’t think someone new gets to demand we rewrite our dynamic. Scott and I even agreed a long time ago that no one we date would change how we treat each other as co-parents.

Here’s the kicker: I’m currently in a relationship too. My boyfriend respects how I treat Scott, and even tells Scott he loves him too. He thinks it’s great that our son sees all the adults in his life showing love and support, even if they’re not all together. It sets a good example.

I’ve now told Scott that from now on, I expect our calls about our son to be private, without his girlfriend in the background, because these are parenting conversations. I’m not trying to be dramatic, I just want to preserve what we’ve worked hard to build.

So… AITA for still saying “I love you” and being upset when his girlfriend checks me?
