Help me choose: Bologna, Lake Garda or Venice w/ caveat
My wife and I are going to Italy for our honeymoon in September, spending the first 8 days in Tuscany (5 in the countryside 3 on the coast). We will then head north. Originally thinking Lake Garda then Venice by way of Bologna but there is a caveat. We will be picking my brother in law up in Florence and he'll be joining us for the second half of the trip. He's just graduating college (21yrs old) and was promised a trip to Europe if he finished with a certain GPA. We may have to cut out one city to save on cost for that. I want to go to the best places in Italy but maybe atypical of a honeymoon where I'd prioritize fun over romantic spots (as we'll hit romantic spots in the first half of the trip).
We are also not trying to do 1 night in each city hopping around. What are your thoughts on the below options? This will be ~Sept 13-19. Anything you would change? I've heard Venice is touristy but "magical" at the same time and you shouldn't miss it so I'm leaning toward an option with Venice but would love everyone's thoughts!
Option 1: Pickup BIL in Florence and drive straight to Bologna
- 2 Nights Bologna
- 3 Nights Lake Garda
- Day trip to Verona
- Boat day in lake garda (wondering if it'll be too cold)
- Maybe franciacorta or explore neighboring towns
- Fly Home
Option 2: Pickup in Florence and drive straight to Bologna
- 2 Nights Bologna
- 2 Nights Venice
- Fly Home
Option 3: Pickup in Florence and drive straight to Lake Garda
- 3 nights lake garda
- Same itinerary as prev lake garda
- 2 nights in venice
- Fly home
