Wasteland Waves

Fiction

SFX: [Crackling static, faint hum of old machinery, wind howling outside]

MARLOW (V.O.): (calm, gritty voice) You’re listening to Wasteland Waves, broadcasting out of the ruins of what used to be Milepost City. It’s 10 past dead, and I’m your host, Marlow. The voice in your head that isn’t telling you to eat rat jerky raw.

SFX: [Slide of a vinyl record being placed, old needle scratching]

MARLOW: Let’s kick things off with a golden oldie, salvaged from a cracked disc I found under a skeleton. Here’s “Sunshine Dreams” by The Mellowtones. Don’t ask what year—dates don’t mean much when your calendar’s on fire.

SFX: [Old-timey music plays for 30 seconds—cheerful but eerie in contrast to the world]

SFX: [Music fades, replaced by more wind and faint Geiger counter ticking]

MARLOW: That was… disturbingly optimistic. Hope it didn’t make you nostalgic enough to dig up your own grave.

In today’s news—if you can call it that—The Rustback Raiders were spotted crawling around Sector 12. Eyewitness says they were dragging something big. Either a generator, or one of those mutant bears that wandered too close to a tanning bed. Either way, keep your distance. Or don’t. I’m not your dad.

SFX: [Old dial tone clicks, followed by a caller connecting]

CALLER #1 (CRACKLY VOICE): Uh, Marlow? This is Clip, out by the Husked Hills. Anyone out there seen my dog, Scraps? He’s got three legs, one glowing eye, and barks in Morse code. Real friendly.

MARLOW: Scraps, if you’re out there, your owner misses you. Stop chasing radioactive butterflies and come home. We’ll play “Who’s a Good Boy” until the sun eats itself.

SFX: [Click—line disconnects]

MARLOW: In other weirdness, a traveler passed through yesterday. Claimed to have seen a working vending machine out by the old interstate. Said it spat out a bag of chips. Real chips. Salt and vinegar, still crispy. Then it started singing the national anthem in reverse and exploded.

Just another Tuesday.

SFX: [Soft clinking of bottles, Marlow takes a drink]

MARLOW: Tastes like rust and regret. Must be a good batch.

Now it’s time for “Found Notes”, where I read something someone left behind. Today’s entry was scratched into the side of an overturned fridge:

MARLOW (reading slowly): “Don’t trust the tomatoes. They remember.”

That’s it. That’s the whole note. God, I love this job.

SFX: [Sudden distant boom, low rumble shakes the mic]

MARLOW: Well, that was either thunder or someone just found out not to poke the mushroom craters. If you’re south of the Spire, maybe take cover. Or don’t. Again—not your dad.

Before we sign off, a reminder: The trading post near the cracked freeway is still open, but they’re only accepting bartered goods and bad poetry. Don’t bother showing up with bottle caps unless you want to be laughed at by a man wearing a tire as a belt.

SFX: [Clicks on another record, very faint lo-fi blues begins to play]

MARLOW: That’s all for today, wanderers. Keep your feet dry, your Geiger counter close, and your heart a little open—even if it’s wrapped in lead. This is Marlow, signing off from Wasteland Waves. Remember— If you’re still listening… You’re not alone.

SFX: [Music swells a little louder, radio static rises and blends into the music as it fades out]
