6cm Liver Adenoma Causing Nausea, Weight Loss, IVC Compression—Told It’ll Likely Just Be Monitored?
Hi all, hoping someone here can help shed some light or give advice as I’m at breaking point.
I’m a 31-year-old female based in the UK and was recently diagnosed with a 6cm liver adenoma after experiencing ongoing nausea, abdominal pain, and reduced appetite for several weeks. I’ve now lost a noticeable amount of weight and can barely eat without feeling sick.
A recent scan also showed the adenoma is compressing my IVC, which I thought would make this more of a concern but I’ve been told by a nurse that the plan will likely be just to monitor it every six months. She said I do have a consultation coming up with a liver specialist, but they won’t operate and will likely just keep an eye on it. She even suggested the adenoma might not be causing my symptoms, which feels incredibly dismissive because I know how unwell I feel.
I’ve had flank pain and upper abdominal discomfort on and off for years, but it’s now become constant with pain levels that vary each day. On top of that, I can barely eat without feeling nauseous. I’m on anti-sickness medication, which I have to take 2–3 times a day.
I was sent to A&E by my GP with severe abdominal pain, and despite explaining where the pain was, they fobbed me off to gynaecology, which didn’t make sense because that wasn’t the area of pain at all. Gynaecology had no idea why I was there. They requested an ultrasound, and from there, I had all these urgent scans, including an MRI and CT scan, which eventually led to the diagnosis of the adenoma without any proper communication from the hospital.
One of my biggest concerns is that I’ve been wanting to try for a baby, and I know that hormone changes during pregnancy can make adenomas grow or rupture especially ones over 5cm. But when I raised this concern, I felt like it wasn’t taken seriously either.
I’ve never been on the pill, so I don’t understand why this developed or got so big. I’m now looking at private care because I just don’t feel like anyone is listening to how badly this is affecting my daily life.
Is this really standard practice for something this large and symptomatic? Can it really just be monitored, even with IVC compression and plans to get pregnant?
Any advice, personal experiences, or next-step suggestions would be really appreciated. I’m feeling totally stuck, unheard and at breaking point.
Thank you!
