How do I break into Metals and Mining Finance?

Breaking In

I'm a 30 year old male mining engineer with 5 years of experience as Regional Manager for a leading mining solutions provider (selling chemicals and providing/executing specialised consulting services to mining and infrastructure companies) and 1 year of experience consulting in a mining/decarbonisation public policy/consulting. I wanted to explore so I got me an MBA from a good B School in APAC Ex Australia (a foreign country for me). Towards the tail end of the course I managed to secure a Corporate Finance and Investment Banking Internship (6months) in metals and mining team of a good bank (not bulge bracket), and that changed everything for me. I now cannot think of anything else I would want for myself.

I couldn't secure a full time offer, there was never one in the first place, and I don't have working rights in this country. I'm not very sure there is a pronounced Mining Finance industry back home, I would have known about it. So now I feel stuck questions such as:

  1. Should I pitch myself for an Analyst role? Is that looked down upon? All of the folks at that level were some years off undergrad at the bank. Is that usually the case? Me, I absolutely don't mind starting over.

  2. Should I pick up some other job, apply for a work permit for Australia and then try to break in? I expect the timeline to be ~2 years at least, meaning a 32yo entry level job seeker there, with 8yrs of other experiences.

What do you think?
