Buying a Dimmer? Here's what you should know first (Beginner-Friendly Guide)

Upgrading to a dimmer switch is one of the simplest ways to improve lighting comfort and energy efficiency. But before you pick one, here are a few key factors to consider—especially if you're new to this:

1. Confirm your bulb type

Not all dimmers work with all bulbs. LEDs, incandescents, and CFLs each have different dimming requirements. Make sure your bulb is labeled "dimmable," and choose a dimmer that's compatible with its specs to avoid flickering or a limited dimming range.

2. Know your wiring configuration

➡️ Single-pole: One switch controls one light.

➡️ 3-way or multi-location: Two or more switches control the same light.

Choose a dimmer that matches your setup—this is clearly marked on most product packaging.

3. Check for a neutral wire

Many modern dimmers—especially smart dimmers—require a neutral wire to function properly.

✅ If your home was built or renovated after the mid-1980s, you probably have one.

🚫 If not, make sure to select a dimmer that supports no-neutral installation.

4. Decide if you want smart features

Want voice control, app scheduling, or scene presets? Go smart. The ELEGRP Smart Dimmer Series connects over Wi-Fi (no hub needed), works with Alexa/Google, and installs like a regular switch.

Still unsure? Drop your setup details (bulb type, wiring, smart or not), and I’d be happy to help you pick the right model from the ELEGRP lineup.
