Canadian Citizen IMG Torn Between Doing a Master’s in Endodontics in Egypt or Going All-In for U.S./Canada Endo Residency — Need Advice from Anyone Who’s Been There
Hi everyone,
I’m a Canadian citizen and internationally trained dentist from Egypt. I graduated from Ain Shams University in 2023, completed my internship in 2024, and have spent the past year fully dedicating myself to endodontics in preparation for applying to residency programs in the U.S. and Canada.
Here’s my current profile: • GPA: 3.39 (WES evaluated) • Ranked 11th out of 27 in my class • Completed 347+ CE hours in endodontics — including: • Microscope- and loupes-assisted CE programs • Style Italiano Endodontics congress & mishap workshop • Advanced shaping, irrigation, obturation, and retreatment courses • Performed 24–27 molar RCTs, including: • Severely curved canals • Upper 7 with limited access and distal access cavity • Broken file management • Have strong LoRs from: • Dean and professors at Ain Shams University (including Endodontics, Operative, Biomaterials, Periodontics) • An endodontist in Canada • A U.S. endodontist who is faculty at Case Western Reserve University • Two clinics in Egypt • Planning to secure one from University of Toronto (pending research involvement) • Preparing for INBDE in Fall 2025 • Planning to do research at either the University of Toronto or Augusta University • Also planning U.S./Canada observerships and more CE
⸻
Now I’m stuck in this big decision:
Option 1: Stay in Egypt & Do a Master’s in Endodontics • I’d gain deeper clinical training in endo with a structured program. • But I’d have limited time to travel, and no real chance to do CE abroad or engage in North American research or observerships. • I’m also worried that 2–3 years will go by and I’ll have less relevant experience for U.S./Canada applications.
Option 2: Travel Now & Go All-In for U.S./Canada Residency • As a Canadian citizen, I don’t have visa issues in Canada and could start building my North American CV immediately. • I’d focus entirely on INBDE, CE courses, observerships, research, and networking. • It’s more expensive and riskier, but this path feels more aligned with my long-term goal: becoming a specialist in endodontics in North America. • I also fear losing time and momentum if I delay this step.
⸻
I love Egypt and honestly struggle with the thought of leaving home for something that’s not guaranteed. But I also know how determined I am to specialize in endo — and I can’t imagine doing anything else.
If anyone has faced a similar situation, or if you are an endo resident who’s seen applicants with either background — what would you recommend?
Any honest thoughts would mean the world. Thank you.
