Unpopular opinion: Mother’s Day angst is your own fault

I’m going to catch all sorts of hell for this, maybe even get banned. After seeing post after post of women lamenting the lack of gifts or meals out or any sort of major recognition for the day, I’ve reached my fill.

Motherhood is an investment in another human being. This culture of instant return on this investment is asinine. You should absolutely be celebrated today - by your children. You should get all the love and recognition for being awesome - from your children. If your children, full grown or little, aren’t doing so, their father should be ashamed of not doing better.

Today, or February 14th or the holiday season at the end of the year, isn’t a bellwether for your relationship. It’s the whitehead on a boil of a larger problem. Thinking today that all the issues would magically disappear to have a movie perfect day is myopic.

Your angst over today is your responsibility. If your children aren’t celebrating you today, it’s just as much your fault as it is your husband’s.
