My best friend is grieving and I’m unsure how to help her

I am a guy and my female best friend, who resides in another state, just recently lost her grandmother to a terminal illness. This will be the first Mother’s Day that she isn’t around and my friend is understandably not taking it well.

I’ll be honest. For some reason, I’m not very good at consoling others. I’m definitely capable of feeling sympathetic but do not always know when to say the right things, as it may come off as unintentionally insensitive.

Currently, I’m just trying to find ways to make her smile and did send her flowers yesterday. But when she talks about how sad she is about her grandmother, I feel awkward and I hate that. Any advice on how to help her through this time?
