My (m23) father (late m50's) wants to connect after 20 years of meeting only 5 times. He's now my only living blood relative. How do I approach making this decision?

My parents split up when I was about 2 years old, and my mom moved home to France, my Dad stayed in the US (where he's from). The divorce, from what I understand, was acrimonious, and apart from paying maintenance for me, he has had virtually no involvement in my life. I got to know his parents, my grandparents, before they died, and I loved them dearly, though they had minimal contact with my dad.

In the 20 years since my parents split, I saw him 5-6 times, normally when I was visiting my paternal grandparents, and then I met him and had a meal with him at my grandmother's funeral when I was 14. I had not seen him since then, 9 years ago.

I met him recently at my grandfather's memorial service in the US. After the service, we had a meal, and he suggested that, as I'm his only child (probably not true), we should get to know each other more. He talked a lot about my mom (they were incompatible and she was too young), my maternal grandparents (they we controlling and never trusted anyone), and his parents (who never really let go). It felt like he was trying to make sure I saw him in a good light. Something felt off. When I suggested he visit the UK to meet my future husband, he was very non-committal - he started with an enthusiastic yes and then backtracked over the next 10 minutes to say it would depend on the timing. As the meal went on, he started to probe me about how I made my money, and he was very interested in whether my maternal grandparents and mom had left me a good trust fund.

My BF thinks he's after my money or at least wants me to not inherit from my paternal grandparents, but he's never met my dad and only knows him from the little I've said and talking at length this morning in FaceTime.

How do I navigate this new relationship? I know I have to be careful, but I've never had a chance to have a dad before, and I think it might be nice to have a parent who is around, but I'm lost.
