Soil moisture
Personal opinion - a simple $10-20 moisture meter you can get at any hardware store or Amazon can help with 50% of the “over under watering questions”.
Personally, I’ve had times where I thought things were being watered fine until I stuck on moisture meter in there, and realized that the watering was not hitting the majority of the root ball (poor absorption, can use aloe or other items to help with absorption) and that there were channels that were created where the water would just kind of go to certain parts or bleed through.
I have also had times where I thought a plant was dry and needed water on the same schedule as my others, but upon using a moisture meter, I could see that it was extremely wet at the bottom of the container and would benefit from a day or two of no water.
Long story short - get a moisture meter, learn how to use it effectively, it’s worth it.
