Should I move to Portugal (D7 passive income visa) or stay in Turkey?
Hello everyone,
I’m dealing with a personal dilemma and feeling very indecisive, so I wanted to ask for your advice—after all, two heads are better than one. I’ve obtained a residence permit for Portugal. It’s initially valid for 2 years + another 3 years (if I meet the conditions), and after completing 5 years, I can apply for citizenship. This visa is based on passive income—you apply by proving earnings of around €1,000 per month (e.g., interest, rental income). My visa has been approved.
The issue is, I’m torn about whether to go or not. I currently live with my family in Ankara, and I enjoy my comfort zone, though I know it can also be limiting. I have 8 years of experience as a financial specialist in the private sector. I’m a 35-year-old single man, never married. I don’t have a job lined up in Portugal, and I’m not sure what kind of work I could find there. In Turkey, with my experience, I can land jobs with an average salary of 60k TRY. I speak English. In Ankara, I live comfortably like this. In Portugal, however, there’s rent and other expenses—plus, it might take months to secure housing, and I’d be going without a job. On the other hand, I’d gain Schengen travel rights, and while not automatic, it might make finding work in other European countries easier.
I’m close to my family, and I don’t have a "I must escape Turkey" mindset, but of course, I want to think about the future.
What would you do? Would you stay or go?
Does my passive income + a salaried job in Turkey outweigh the alternatives?
Or does passive income + moving to Portugal open more doors and carry more weight?
I’m open to your advice...
For this visa, to qualify for citizenship after 5 years, I’d need to spend about 8 months per year in Portugal—the remaining time could be spent elsewhere or back home.
THANK YOU!
